When an insurance producer takes this course, they will gain 18 hours of continuing education on ethics, life and accident and health insurance.
This course will take an in-depth look at a number of issues surrounding ethics and the producer. The course begins with a look at trust in the industry, and whether clients actually trust insurance producers compared to other professions. It continues with a comparison of ethics versus morality, and discusses how individual beliefs alter ethical choices at times. Corporate ethical behaviors are scrutinized, and the lesson explores situations in which ethics and morals collide.
There are a number of approaches to making an ethical decision, and we will take a look at a number of different methods that can be employed when faced with an ethical decision. A number of concepts and terms are explored, and the course will consider the legal ramifications associated with poor ethical choices. As an important part of ethical compliance, we will also delve into unethical and unfair trade and claims practices, which have been heavily regulated by the state insurance divisions to protect clients and others.
The course will concentrate on the producer’s ethical duties to the customer, the agency, and others in the business. The course provides plenty of examples to compare intelligent decision-making to decisions that are not that well thought out. We finish with the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Code of Ethics, which gives an excellent ethical baseline in which to base ethical behavior, and the Code of Ethics that Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters must ascribe to. The ethics lesson concludes with an idea of creating an in-house Code of Ethics for the agency or for a related type of insurance business, and the importance of doing so.
At the end of this course, there will be an examination that must be passed with a score of 70% or better. The exam may be taken as many times as needed to pass.
The life and health course contains three segments that focus on insurance in general, life insurance, and accident and health insurance.
The training on insurance in general discusses fundamental concepts including risk and risk management, loss, agency, and insurance contracts.
The portion of the course that is concerned with life insurance explores core concepts of life insurance, standard provisions in life insurance policies, and annuities.
- The segments covering core concepts will discuss the nature and purpose of life insurance, the different types of life policies, and what this kind of insurance is used to accomplish.
- The training on standard contract provisions will talk about the standard provisions found in life insurance policies before moving onto a discussion of beneficiaries and options and riders.
- The instruction on annuities will look in depth at this type of insurance product and how it compares to other forms of life insurance.
The segment of the course that addresses accident and health insurance will talk about the core aspects of health insurance, provisions and options that are normally found in health insurance policies, and long-term care insurance.
- The part of the course on core aspects of health insurance will describe what makes health insurance unique, look at the different forms of health insurance, and discuss health insurance underwriting.
- The segment on health insurance provisions and options will go over the contractual elements of a health insurance policy.
- Long term care insurance (or LTC) is the primary interest of one segment of this course. This segment will cover the primary elements of LTC, how LTC can be marketed, and suitability issues.
To finish the course, a student will complete a 80 question exam. The intent is to help students understand and retain the content of this course.
Note: On and after January 1, 2022, the bill amends the CEC requirement for agents to require each licensed agent to earn 18 CECs biennially, permit at least 3 hours of instruction in ethics, and remove the required insurance agency management hours.
