This topical 8-hour continuing education course will provide the Virginia Property and Casualty licensee with current and up-to-date information on numerous topics in order to successfully renew their license. Topics in this course include an in-depth discussion of homeowner insurance policies, a detailed discussion of generic workers’ compensation policies, an extensive exploration of businessowner contracts, and a modern, updated course on other coverages and options available in the marketplace that can assist in completing a consumer’s insurance package.  

Keep in mind that Virginia requires that licensees complete 24 hours of continuing education each licensing period and those hours must include three hours of professional ethics education.  

Specifically, the course examines these topics: 

  • Homeowner’s insurance, including eligibility, purpose, characteristics and coverage forms. Named versus open-peril coverage, key definitions and concepts, liability including bodily injury, property damage and methods of coverage. Businesses and employees are also addressed, defining who is an insured and what is an occurrence. Property coverages include other residences, special liability limits, exclusions, and conditions. Civil authority and additional property coverage are also covered.Liability and medical payments coverage includes additional coverage, claims expense, and first aid. Exclusions, duties after a loss, and suits against the insurer are outlined. Policy provisions address loss settlements, pairs and sets, appraisal, and mortgage clauses. Section II liability covers insurable interest, duties after a loss, and other insurance. Selected endorsements include scheduled personal property, newly acquired property, and covered perils. Territorial limits, loss settlements, and personal property replacement cost are also covered. Additional endorsements address business pursuits, watercraft, personal injury, identity fraud, and home daycare. 
  • Workers' compensation covers the origins and progression of no-fault coverage for workplace injuries and illnesses, important terms and definitions, worker classifications, and policy structure. It includes employer liability policies, covered and excluded losses, conditions, and premium adjustments. Additionally, it addresses job classifications, rate determination, experience modifiers, premium discounts, and second injury funds, providing a comprehensive framework for workers' compensation coverage.
  • Businessowner Policy (BOP) basics, including eligibility and purpose, property insurance coverage for buildings and personal property, deductibles, loss conditions, and liability coverage with medical payments. It also explores limits of insurance, coverage extensions, and selected endorsements, providing a comprehensive overview of BOP policies. 
  • An in-depth look at specialized insurance coverages and options, including umbrella and excess liability policies for personal and commercial clients, cyber liability and network protection for businesses, and professional liability coverage for errors and omissions, directors and officers, and more. It explores coverage for assets like watercraft, recreational vehicles, and mobile homes, as well as surplus lines coverage and rules. Key topics include policy construction, exclusions, and conditions for various insurance products, such as cyber insurance, flood insurance, and employment practices liability. The course also covers national flood insurance plan basics, watercraft and boatowner coverage, and recreational vehicle coverage for various RV types, providing a comprehensive overview of niche insurance products and solutions for individuals and businesses. 

This updated course includes many illustrations and examples to aid in learning and retention, and goes beyond the basic information needed for licensees. The course will introduce the candidate to terms, definitions and concepts that are not just the foundation of P&C insurance, but are intended to accelerate and amplify the student’s knowledge.  

To receive a certificate of completion for this 8-hour course, a 45-question final exam must be successfully passed.
